Sushi Tei @ The Gardens

To celebrate the (belated) 10th anniversary of the start of the journey of the two fat bears, the bears decided to try out the often-passed-by-but-never-tried Japanese restaurant, Sushi Tei.

As always, a que is always forming at the entrance.
The bears waited for 5 minutes and were already shown to their seats, nice 🙂

So as tradition, BB ordered a plate of Japanese curry chicken rice…

Curry Rice
BB said he have tried better ones before, this was not the best one. WB however, believed this is actually quite nice. Reason being it has a much heavier curry spice flavour, and evidently less sweet, as Japanese curry tends to be more sweet than spicy. The potatoes and carrots were cooked just right, but the chicken… feels like it is not marinated beforehand at all.

Ebi Don
Looks really nice right? Until you sink your chopsticks on the tempura prawns. The prawns was not piping hot out from the fryer, the flour covering it was already soft and separating from the prawn itself. That apart, the taste of the rice with its gravy was nice. But the bears will not recommend this dish to anyone, utter disappointment.

Next, cheeky WB grabbed a nice plate of sushi off the conveyor belt, name has been forgotten but it is actually crab leg topped with cod fish roes wrapped in beancurd, this tasted amazing…! ❤

No visit to a sushi place is complete without a plate of fresh salmon sashimi!
20140901_121549
These 5 pieces of salmon are fresh, fat and juicy. Worth it!!! 😀

Besides the curry, the two bears also ordered some nice plates of sushi off the menu.

20140901_123258
Penthouse Salmon rolls
These are actually rolls of rice with avocado as the core, topped with smoked salmon, topped with omelet, topped with burned cheese. They hold up really well when handled with chopsticks (sushi master has got good skills), tasted very nice and satisfying, the only regret WB has is that (in her opinion) the cheese should be burned more so that it melts and covers the top of the sushi.

Phoenix rolls
The core of the rolls are fried shrimp, topped with unagi, then topped with a slice of fresh avocado. Not bad, but not sure if this is a nice combination though. WB loved the avocado, and the unagi, but was not so sure about the fried shrimp. Somehow, it feels like it should have more sauces added to it, to make it more succulent.

The bill came up to RM80+. The fat bears were so full that they could barely walk, after downing so much Japanese rice. But this is a good place apart from the disastrous Ebi Don, and no wonder there is a long que every time the bears passed by 🙂

Bangkok (Food Page)

So back in March this year (more specifically 19-24 March), the bears went for a short trip to Bangkok, Thailand, the land of smiles 🙂

So in this post, only food will be discussed, (for sight seeing part, wait a bit!)
Without further adieu, let’s bring out the first meal the bears had in Bangkok, …..and it’s McDonald’s 😀

Now, you may think that the bears were really idiotic, going all the way to Bangkok for McD?? No no… they are special, why? because they serve pork in Thailand 🙂

McDonald’s

This is the famous McD Pork Burger! It tastes great, no wonder it’s famous among tourists to Bangkok from Malaysia!
20140319_150210   20140319_150503
Besides pork burger, they also serve Bento there, this is Kapraw Chicken rice, tastes sweet, sour and spicy (black pepper type spicy), yes, it tastes really good as well ! Notice that the receipt, McD is now McThai, such a cute name 🙂

Terminal 21 Food Court – Pier 21

This food court is located on the floor of San Francisco in Terminal 21 mall, it hosts a variety of food choices, at an amazingly low price, below is a list of food the bears took there.

20140319_174017
Spicy seafood rice – quite nice

20140319_174420
Black pepper seafood pasta – nice 🙂

20140319_175509
Mango Sticky rice – nice 🙂

20140323_181037
Wat tan hor (broad rice noodles in thick gravy) – very nice 🙂 🙂

20140323_181640
Tom Yum Gong – very spicy, tastes okay. Not recommended for people who are not used to hot food.

20140323_182741
Duck noodles – not good 😦

20140323_181055
Cranberry juice – cheap, filled with real cranberries, it won’t get any better than this! 🙂 🙂 🙂 This is the thing that WB missed the most of Bangkok, if only this is available at the same price in KL 😦

Platinum Mall Food Court

There is also a food court on the top floor (if I’m not wrong) in the famous Platinum Mall. The bears tried only a handful of food there as lunch, but there is one thing that is incredibly memorable of WB there 🙂

20140320_123154
Pork rice (chinese dish – difficult to translate) – not very good 😦

20140320_123350
Kuey Teow soup (broad rice noodles – especially popular in Thailand) – this was ok…

20140320_125204
Fried Kuey Teow – the best kuey teow WB has ever eaten! til this day, WB is still mumbling about how good this was, definitely one of the memorable dish in Bangkok! 😀

Chinatown Rut and Lek Seafood (R&L)

This was a planned event for the bears, they went there after a lot of research and tried the more popular dishes. A piece of advise, first, come early (eg. around 6pm); second, the charges were a bit overpriced (expected considering it’s so popular among tourists).

IMG_3346
It’s only a stall at the side of the road, but the crowd was incredible.

IMG_3341
Seafood Tom Yum Gong – very hot, but it was qutie nice, filled with fish, prawns, squids 🙂

IMG_3343
Crab Fried Rice – nothing really special except that there was crab meat in the fried rice.

IMG_3344
Crab cooked in Egg gravy – a bit spicy, but it was juicy and nice, when taken with the fried rice, was heavenly 🙂

IMG_3337
Grilled River Prawns – there were three here, although their heads were ginormous, the real meat on the bodies are quite little, tastes OK, but quite pricey.

IMG_3339
Pomelo Juice – much needed refreshments to put out the fire in the bears’ mouths…..

IMG_3350
A picture to commemorate the aftermath 😀

Silom Mall – Hachi-Ban Ramen

IMG_3466
This is a good ramen shop! and affordable prices too 🙂

IMG_3463    IMG_3462
On the left is kimchi soup, on the right is regular soup, both was amaziiiinggg…!

IMG_3461
The bears ordered a plate of gyoza, and they were not disappointed.. a thumb’s up for this small ramen shop!

Burger King

Burger King serves pork too, a BBQ pulled pork burger.

20140323_205730   20140323_214009
This burger had nothing to shout about, the meat was too chewy and dry.. 😦 McD’s was much much better.

Royal Palace street – small shop

This shop is located along the busy street in front of the palace main entrance, even though with the magnitude of tourists, the price for this shop is quite cheap.

20140321_125934
Fish Ball Rice Vermicelli Soup- Nice fishball and fish paste, more to BB’s taste, he liked it 🙂

Chatuchak Market

20140322_104321
Wantan noodles – Breakfast in Chatuchak, inexpensive and taste really good, especially the dry one!

20140322_122736   20140322_123224
These two dishes, not worth mentioning, because these two dishes cost RM70, eaten at a stall in Chatuchak market. This was the only time the bears ever felt cheated in Bangkok (probably a lot more times but did not realize). A word of caution for readers, beware of these vendors in Chatuchak.

Street Food

20140321_131207
Coconut Ice Cream – heavenly, bought this near the royal palace, it’s sweet and tastes salty at the end of a bite, amazing! both bears love this ❤

20140321_150307
Thai Pancake Sausage wrap – bought from a stall in Silom, costs only 10 baht, includes a pancake wrap, minced pork meat, and a sausage, this is oh-so-amazing and cheap! Some other version contains egg.

20140321_203515
Pork sate (if i may call it sate) – the one on the right tastes sweet and tender, very good, the one on the left that resembles taiwan sausage, was weird and sour, do not buy this one! These two can be found at a lot of places.

20140323_143138
Chicken Rice – (sorry for the grainy picture, taken in hotel room) bought from a stall near Silom, the bears asked the seller to mix the chicken (roasted + steamed), they were wonderful, and was one of the most memorable dish of Thailand! A must try! 😀

Don Muang Airport – Silom Village

Before the bears depart from Bangkok, they tried to finished off their Thai Baht, so they headed to a restaurant in the airport and ordered a myriad of dishes… (many people were staring at that time 😀 )

20140324_092904
Wantan soup – a lot of wantans, quite nice 🙂

20140324_093036
Wantan noodles – BB didn’t like it, but it was ok to WB, yum yum!

20140324_093325
Curry Kuey Teow soup – gawd this was spicy!

20140324_094047
Pandan leaves chicken – WB ordered this because they didn’t get to try any of this on their trip, but this dish was not good, meat was dried and looked like they were patched and stick together with flour…

The only thing that the bears regretted, was not having the chance to try an amazing pot of Tom Yum in Bangkok, next time, they are determined to find the best Tom Yum in Bangkok!

Absolute Thai @ The Gardens Mall

On the 16th of December, WB had a Xmas dinner with her colleagues.
To suit the need of the team manager, who has an addiction to anything sweet and sour,
they chose Absolute Thai in the Gardens, which is nearby to the office.

There was  a total of 12 people in the team, thus, much food must be ordered!
CYMERA_20131226_141814

For starters, they went for an assorted plate of appetizers
CYMERA_20131226_130028
Fishcakes, spring rolls, fried dumplings & etc, they were nice.

Then the main course…
CYMERA_20131226_141755
Pandan leave chickens – juicy and chewy, just right! better than Amarin’s.

CYMERA_20131226_141434
Green Curry chicken – very very spicy, few chicken bites and a lot of brinjals.

CYMERA_20131226_141646
Cashew nut chicken (forgets its name) – tasted like sweet and sour, nothing special.

CYMERA_20131226_141519   CYMERA_20131226_141543
Two big Tom Yam gung – left : with river prawns, right : usual. Both soup tasted so-so, the river prawns were mushy, not recommended, Amarin’s Tom Yum was much more memorable.

CYMERA_20131226_141612
Thai Chilli Siakap – Nice, although the taste was very similar to the sweet and sour fish

CYMERA_20131226_141730
Asparagus – Nice one but portion was too small, prawns in this dish are so fresh and tasty!

CYMERA_20131226_141708
Kailan – very nice as well, love the veg!

In total, the bill came up to RM700++ for 12 people!
But if you have CIMB card, you’ll get some discount.
However, WB still thinks that Amarin is much better!

Ichiban Ramen @ Sunway Pyramid

On a lazy Sunday (3rd June 2012), the fat bears went to Sunway Pyramid to have a look.
It has been a year since the bears were last spotted in Sunway, wandering around.
As always, Brown Bear got hungry, and White Bear was obligated to hunt food with him.

So they finally decided on Ichiban Ramen,
because ramen was the favourite food of the Brown Bear.

Kimchi Chicken Ramen
Verdict : Nice, both bears loved it

Chicken Teriyaki Don
Verdict : Many chicken, worth it

The bill was around Rm 30, r’Amen!

After that, the bears went to stalk the ice skaters, admiring their slender bodies gliding on the ice.
They did not join in because being fat bears, there would only be two outcomes,
a) they would fall every step they make on the ice, and
b) they would scare off all the graceful ice skaters.

So after a small walk around Sunway, the bears went home, feeling hungry again, as usual.
